B'town wins behind rookie QB

BEEKMANTOWN -- Carter Frechette's first carry was a 25-yard touchdown. His first throw was a 63-yard completion. And his third throw was a 27-yard touchdown.

Not a bad debut as the starting quarterback.

Frechette, a freshman who's normally a defensive starter for Beekmantown, also stepped in on offense Saturday and helped the Eagles to a 33-14 Northern Football Conference win over AuSable Valley.

Matt Durocher ran in two touchdowns for Beekmantown (3-2). Frechette finished 3-for-4 for 104 yards in the air and ran for 28 yards.

"He played extremely well," Beekmantown coach Mark Haley said of Frechette. "He did a great job leading the team. He didn't play like a freshman.

"He's got a very good head on his shoulders. I knew he would play within himself and not try to do too much."

Frechette scampered to the end zone from the 25-yard line on the Eagles' first possession to give them a 6-0 lead.

AuSable Valley answered right back. Larry Coolidge muscled in from the 9-yard line to cap a 67-yard scoring drive and tie the game almost eight minutes into the first quarter.

Frechette connected with Andrew Price for 63 yards, which helped set up Durocher's 6-yard touchdown run with 2:18 left in the quarter.

And after the Patriots fumbled on the kickoff return, Frechette hit Price over the middle for a 27-yard score as the Eagles took a 20-6 lead.

"We needed to close down the defense a little bit," Haley said. "They really were going off tackle. Our defensive ends were coming up field too fast and not closing down their gap. And once we started doing better with that, we kind of shut them down.

"Our defense is very quick. We're tough to get to the outside with. And it showed, I think, as the game wore on."

In the second quarter, Beekmantown's Patrick Manor powered 9 yards to the end zone. Durocher scored again after another AuSable Valley fumble, and the Eagles went into halftime with a 33-6 advantage.

Jordan Case added a 4-yard touchdown for AuSable Valley (0-5) in the fourth quarter. Coolidge finished with 105 rushing yards, and Isaac Hathaway rushed for 33.

Frechette got the start for Beekmantown because senior Jonah Larson was one of several players sidelined due to an issue outside of school, according to Haley. They'll return next week.
