Malone falls in state semis

BINGHAMTON -- Sophomore Ryan Jones drove in four runs Saturday and Section IV's Maine-Endwell held off Malone's Franklin Academy, 5-4, in the NYSPHSAA Class A Final Four baseball semifinals.

Jones' two-run singled in the bottom of the fifth broke a 3-all tie and gave Maine-Endwell its win.

The Huskies (13-6), however, made in plenty interesting in the seventh.

Singles by Brock Bannon, Zack Leffler and Brad Fleury made it 5-4 before Brian Ruby, who took over in relief in the seventh, got the final two outs of the game with two strikeouts.

Maine-Endwell (22-1) scored a run in the first inning when Tyler Yesensky doubled and later scored on an infield error. Then, in the third, Jones, following a couple of walks, rapped a two-run double to make it 3-0.

Malone got two of the runs back in the fourth. Singles by Brad Fleury, Nick Leffler and Allen Spinner loaded the bases. Casey Warner followed with a two-out, two-run single before a groundout ended the inning.

The Huskies then drew even in the fifth when Zack Leffler tripled and scored on a wild throw to third.

Winning pitcher Andy Barbarino struck out four, walked three and allowed six hits in going the first six innings.

Losing pitcher Brad Fleury, who went 4.1 innings, fanned two, walked three and surrendered five hits.

Yesensky and Jones rapped out two hits each for Maine-Endwell, while Zack Leffler and Brad Fleury each had two for the Huskies.

Maine-Endwell then went on to beat Islip 7-4.
