Records fall in Queensbury Invitational
Seton Catholic star named Female Track Athlete of Queensbury Invitational

QUEENSBURY -- Mary Kate Champagne, Jeff Stitt and Eric LaValley each turned in two record-setting performances Saturday to highlight a strong showing by Section VII athletes at the Queensbury Invitational track & field meet.

Champagne was named Female Track Athlete of the Meet for her splendid showing. The Seton Catholic senior set a meet record in winning the 3,000 meters in the morning with a time of 9:48.49 and then came back in the afternoon to run a strong second in the 1,500 with a time of 4:34.28.

Both times erased Section VII outdoor records set last year by Champagne. She ran a 4:39.43 for the 1,500 at the Eddy Meet last spring and a 9:49.22 for the 3,000 at the state championships.

Stitt and LaValley also had excellent meets as Beekmantown produced three school records.

Stitt won the triple jump in dramatic fashion. Derek Seward of Burnt Hills overtook Stitt with a leap of 42, 2 1/2 inches, but Stitt came back on his final jump to go 43 feet, 1 inch to win the event. He bettered his own school mark of 41 feet, 8 inches.

LaValley came in third in the 800 meters with a time of 2:02.66, which beat Jeremy Trombley's school record of 2:03.7 set in 2001.

Stitt and LaValley also got in on a new Beekmantown record for the 400-meter relay. Braxton Raymond and Brian Drollette rounded out the Eagle foursome that came in second with a fully-automated time of 44.55 seconds, just under the school standard of 44.6 set in 2005 and equalled last season.

Beekmantown also placed fourth in the 1,600-meter relay with a team of Drollette, Josh Garren, LaValley and Braxton. They were timed in 3:34.41.

Garren wins

hurdles race

Garren captured the 400-meter intermediate hurdles in 59.91 seconds while Beekmantown teammate Mike Moran placed second in the shot put with a throw of 49 feet, 9 inches. Freshman Devon Anderson claimed fifth in the discus with a heave of 128-5.

Their fine showing enabled Beekmantown to finish seventh among boys' teams and 11th in the combined. The invitational attracted several big schools with Shenendehowa winning the girls' team title and Shaker, the boys' crown. Burnt Hills was the overall champion.

Ticonderoga's Lee Berube placed third in a swift mile run with a time of 4:26.20. The race went in meet-record time with Shaker's R.J. Sniffen turning in a 4:20.24. Dustin Scott of Ticonderoga was third in the high jump with a leap of 5 feet, 10 inches.

Ti's Palmer second

The Sentinels' Emily Palmer was runner-up in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 16.77 seconds while Peru's Micayla McGinn came in third in the girls' 800 in 2:22.06 and fourth in the high jump with a leap of 4 feet, 11 inches.
