Saranac puts squeeze on Seton
SARANAC -- John Canning, who had two hits earlier in the game, squeezed home the game-winning run in the bottom of the sixth inning Saturday to give Saranac a 3-2 win over Seton Catholic in Champlain Valley Athletic Conference baseball.
Kalob Drollette struck out seven and walked one in pitching into the seventh inning to get the win for the Division I- leading Chiefs (7-2). Jordan Keysor pitched the seventh for the save.
Tanner Lecuyer fanned six and walked six in going the first five innings for the Knights (5-4) and Matt Seymour took the loss in relief.
With the score tied, at 2-all, in the bottom of the sixth, pinch-hitter Jeremy Favaro singled and pinch-hitter Shawn Tedford followed with a hit-and-run single to right. Canning then executed his suicide-squeeze to plate Favaro.
The Knights got the tying run on second base in the top of the seventh. Left fielder Canning and center fielder Cody Wood, who earlier in the game made a nice running catch in the left-center gap, collided while chasing a fly ball and Canning held on for the final out as both players fell to the ground.
The Chiefs scored a run in the first and added another in the third.
Seton Catholic, however, tied it in the fifth on Joe Champagne's double, Matt Seymour's RBI double and Joe Clauss' RBI single.
"It was a real good game," said Saranac coach Frank Trudeau. "Both starting pitchers did a nice job, as well as the defense behind them.
"A bounce here or there, the game could have gone either way. Seton fought back hard to tie the game and we had a nice suicide squeeze to win it."
