PHS scrambles baseball picture

PLATTSBURGH -- The Plattsburgh High School baseball team, after opening the Champlain Valley Athletic Conference season with two losses, has made its way back into the Division I title picture.
The Hornets scored two unearned runs in the bottom of the sixth inning Thursday and defeated Division I-leading Saranac, 7-5, at Lefty Wilson Field.
The outcome left the Chiefs at 6-2, while the Hornets are 5-2. Beekmantown, which has a 5-3 record, missed out on an opportunity to tie for the division lead with a 3-1 loss to Peru.
Pat Shaughnessy picked up the win in relief of Jon Edwards, while Nick Desroches went the distance in taking the setback.
PHS grabbed a 5-0 lead in the first inning on Shaughnessy's three-run homer and Andrew Manabat's two-run single.
Saranac, however, battled back to eventually tie it with a run in the top of the sixth.
But, in the home half of the sixth, PHS scored twice on a walk, sacrifice, groundout, walk, Brandon Hatch's infield hit to load the bases and an infield error.
Shaughnessy and Hatch led the Hornets with two hits apiece.
Richard Chase and Desroches rapped out two hits each for the Chiefs, with Desroches getting a double. Bryan Tedford chipped in with a solo homer and John Canning a two-run single.
"We came out blazing in the first inning," said PHS head coach Jim Manchester. "But give Saranac credit; they hung in there and Desroches got stronger as the game went on."

BEEKMANTOWN -- Pitching and defense dominated for six scoreless innings.
But, Beekmantown (5-3, 5-3) committed all three of its errors in a three-run top of the seventh as the Indians (3-5, 3-5) posted a win.
The Indians then committed its lone error of the game in the home half of the inning when Beekmantown scored its run when Cody Weaver singled and eventually scored on a miscue.
Peru's Will Flynn and Beekmantown's Andrew Price turned in strong efforts on the hill.
Flynn struck out three, walked one and surrendered eight hits in going the distance for the win. Price, meanwhile, fanned nine and walked two while pitching into the seventh inning for the tough loss.
C.J. Harrell led the Indians with two hits, while Aaron Tenbuuren and Ryan Bishop added doubles. Frank Buksa led the Eagles with three hits, while David Provost added two and Matt Trombly, a double.

AUSABLE FORKS -- The Patriots (4-4, 4-4) gave the Division II-leading Sentinels (7-1, 7-1) all they wanted.
Anthony Barnao started and picked up the win before Tyler Bush took over the fifth and finished the game.
Eric Rock struck out seven, walked three and allowed six hits in taking the complete-game loss.
Todd Carr and Krys Ross led Ticonderoga with two hits each, with Carr getting a double. Hunter Denno played a key role on defense by throwing out two runners at the plate from right field.
AuSable Valley held a 12-6 advantage in hits, with Tom Loreman leading the way with two doubles and two RBI. Kyle Fuller and T.J. Burl each added a double and single.

SARANAC LAKE -- Mike Conway went the distance for the pitching win as he struck out four, walked three and allowed nine hits.
Losing pitcher Kent Fessette, who also went the route, fanned six, walked three and surrendered seven hits.
Tim Reid, Frank Bazzicalupo and James Kordziel all went two-for-three for the Blue Bombers (2-5), with Reid getting a double and three RBI.
Reid rapped a RBI double in the second inning and added a two-run single in the third.
Lake Placid also played well defensively.
Tanner Lecuyer led the Knights (5-3) with three hits, while Bill Bower and Kyle Carpenter added two apiece.
The Knights trailed 4-1 entering the bottom of the seventh when they scored two runs before having the tying run cut down at the plate on a rundown.

CHAMPLAIN -- Northeastern Clinton (3-4) scored five runs in the first inning and didn't look back.
Matt Brown continued to pitch well for the Cougars as he struck out five, walked two and scattered seven hits in going the complete game.
Ryan Armstrong rapped out three hits to lead the NCCS offense, while Cory Trombley, Jon Fortin and Chris Garand all added two hits. Garand, Fortin and Dillon DiOrio hit triples.
Logan McDougall started the took the loss for the Red Storm. Dan Drake and Travis Defuria led Saranac Lake with a couple of hits apiece.

PORT HENRY -- Tim Martin struck out nine and allowed three hits while pitching a complete-game victory for the Vikings over Northern Adirondack.
Rick Larmore led Moriah (4-5, 3-4) with two hits, including a leadoff homer in the bottom of the first inning and two RBI in all. Don Tesar also had two hits and drove in a run.
NAC held a 3-2 lead before the Vikings rallied for four runs in the fifth to lead the lead for good.
Tyler Mesec, who allowed six hits and struck out five in going the route for the loss, and Dylan Lashway rapped RBI singles for NAC.
