Golub captures Champlain tourney

PLATTSBURGH -- Ken Golub of Pittsford, Conn. won the weather-shortened Wal-Mart Bass Fishing League Empire Division Super Tournament on Lake Champlain Sunday with a catch of five bass weighing 21 pounds, 3 ounces.

The victory earned Golub $4,944 plus a $872 Ranger contingency bonus and placed him one step closer to qualifying for the Potomac River Regional Championship in Marbury, Md., Oct. 11-13, where he could ultimately win a new 519VX Ranger boat and a Chevy truck. Golub caught his bass throwing a Senko in deep water.

The tournament was reduced to one day after high winds Saturday forced cancellation of Day 1.

Rounding out the top five boaters were Alex Kolody of Webster, N.Y. (five bass, 18-00, $2,909); Richard Damianos of East Freetown, N.Y. (five bass, 17-07, $1,939); Thomas Lavictoire of West Rutland, Vt. (five bass, 17-06, $1,357) and Dennis Sikorski of Taftville, Conn. (five bass, 16-14, $1,163).

Hugh Worth of Milford, N.H., took home the Boater Division Snickers Big Bass award, earning $772 for a 5-pound, 8-ounce bass.

Kenneth Roderick Jr. of Putnam, Conn., earned $2,909 as the co-angler winner, thanks to five bass weighing 14 pounds, 14 ounces that he caught while fishing a green pumpkin tube in and around grass.

Rounding out the top five co-anglers are Rex Mogargle of Turbotville, Pa. (five bass, 13-10, $1,454); Jason Shipton of Muncy, Pa. (five bass, 13-06, $970); Thomas Prowant of Lewisburg, Pa. (five bass, 12-15, $679) and Al Volpini of Newfield, N.Y. (five bass, 12-14, $582).

John Buries of Montoursville, Pa., earned $386 as the co-angler Big Bass winner after catching a 4-pound, 6-ounce bass.

Steve Hanley, Plattsburgh, came in 13th place with a catch of three bass, weighing 11 pounds, 3 ounces. He earned $271.

Following the end of regular-season competition, the top 40 boaters and 40 co-anglers based on year-end points standings in the division will advance to the no-entry-fee Potomac River Regional Championship where they will compete against top qualifiers from three other BFL divisions.

The top six boaters and top six co-anglers at the Regional Championship will also advance to the 2008 All-American presented by Chevy, which will carry a purse of $1 million.
