Mariners rally for split
GRANVILLE -- It was a split decision for the Clinton County Mariners American Legion baseball team at the Granville American Legion Tournament Saturday.
The Mariners dropped a 12-6 setback to the Champlain Edge U19 team before rebounding for a 6-5 victory over the T.C. Eagles (formerly the South Glens Falls Legion).
Alex LaFountain surrendered seven hits and struck out six in going the distance for the pitching win against the T.C. Eagles.
"LaFountain struggled in the third when they scored four runs," said Mariners head coach John Flynn. "But, he fought back and did a good job.
"We got three runs back in the bottom of the third for him and that helped him settle down."
The hitting standout for Clinton County was Frank Buksa, who rapped three hits, including two doubles.
"We had our backs against the wall after losing our first game of the day and it was a must-win for us," Flynn said.
The Mariners tallied three more runs in the fifth to take a 6-4 advantage and held on.
Against, the Edge U19 team, however, the Mariners trailed only, 7-6, before Champlain scored five runs in the top of the seventh to break it open.
"We were ahead, 4-0, early and then they scored a run on a balk," Flynn said. "There were some calls in the game that took us out of our game and we lost focus."
The Edge took the lead for good, at 5-4, with four runs in the fourth inning and held a 7-4 advantage before the Mariners got two of the runs back in the sixth.
Brett Bosley and Jordan Bezio paced the Mariners (9-6) with two hits each and Will Flynn added a two-run single.
The Mariners play Addison County today at 9 a.m., still with hopes of playing in the championship game later in the day.
