Rain curtails horse show
LAKE PLACID -- Three riders tied for the win Thursday in the $30,000 Leone Family Open Jumper Classic at the 31st annual I Love New York Horse Show.
With heavy rain reducing the starting field from 37 to 20 entries, only three riders managed fault-free rides over the 16-jump, first round course designed by Richard Jeffery at the North Elba Showgrounds. The three were Darragh Kerins of Ireland on Night Train and the husband-and-wife duo of Christine and Jonathan McCrea of Suffield, CT. Jonathan rode clean on Costa and Christine was clean on Promised Land on whom she will defend her championship this Saturday in the $75,000 Hermes Grandprix CSI 3*.
Rather than run their horses in a downpour, the three riders agreed to forego the jump-off and save their mounts for Saturday's featured event.
Thursday's other feature class winner was Miranda Fischer on Hot Wheels in the J. Lohr Vineyards & Wines North American League (NAL) 1.40m Speed Stake. Fischer topped a field of 40 entries with the fastest score of 71.933 seconds in the Table III class where faults are converted to penalty seconds.
The I Love New York Horse Show continues through Sunday, July 6 and is highlighted by the $75,000 Hermes Grandprix on Saturday. Prior to Saturday's Grandprix is the horse show's annual Doggie Costume Contest. All people with a leashed dog in costume will be admitted to the horse show free.
Admission to the I Love New York Horse Show is $2 on weekdays and $5 on the weekend. Children under the age of 12 are admitted free. Tickets are available at the gate.
