---- — OSWEGO — The banged-up Plattsburgh State men’s soccer team, coming off a very tough loss the day before, got out of Oswego with a needed win Saturday.

Matt Hamilton and Jarred Antonucci scored goals as the Cardinals (11-1, 2-1) recorded a 2-0 victory over the Lakers (1-8-1, 0-3-1) in SUNY Athletic Conference play.

“It was a good bounce-back win for us,” said Plattsburgh coach Chris Waterbury. “We did a good job limiting their scoring chances and they didn’t have anything remotely dangerous around our net.”

Plattsburgh senior keeper Andy Heighington recorded the blanking in net, his fifth of the season, and became the school’s all-time leader in shutouts with 32. The previous mark was 31, held by John San Filippo from 2005 to 2008.

On Friday, Plattsburgh fell from the unbeaten ranks when Cortland State recorded a 4-3 win on a penalty kick in overtime.

With key players like Fabian Chaparro, Matt Martin and Mike Payne already sidelined with injuries, the Cardinals lost the services of Erik Hakim with a concussion Saturday.

“No question, our depth came into play,” said Waterbury. “We played in miserable field conditions and we had to juggle players around. We had some guys playing out of position. But they all responded well and I’m happy because they battled hard.

“We hope to get our injured players back hopefully sometime before the playoffs. But every game is important for us just to make the playoffs at this time.”

Hamilton gave the Cardinals the lead for good with a free kick 15:21 into the contest.

“That was the second game in a row where he has scored on a free kick,” said Waterbury. “It came from about 20 yards out.”

Antonucci then added an insurance goal with 10:56 gone in the second half.

“Matt Hamilton sent a thru ball to the right side,” said Waterbury. “Their goalie came off his line and Antonucci slipped the ball under him. He got a piece of it and the ball just trickled across the line.

“That was a massive goal for us. It was their Homecoming Weekend and their crowd was really riled up. Most of our guys did a good job tuning it out. Still, it was a little precarious being up only 1-0. But when we scored our second goal, it took the crowd out of the game.”

The Lakers were credited with an 11-6 shot advantage, with Heighington making four saves for the shutout.

“Andy came out and made all the plays he had to,” said Waterbury. “Defensively, we played very well.

“Nick Pourakis, Matt Hamilton and Wade Goehle played every second this weekend and did a great job. Jason Baker also did a good job playing out of position every time we had a player go down with an injury.”

The Cardinals return home to host New Paltz on Friday at 4 p.m. and Oneonta on Saturday at 1 p.m.
