North Country men fall in OT to Mohawk Valley

UTICA — North Country Community College took one of the top team’s in the region to overtime Saturday.

Unfortunately, the Saints ran out of gas in the extra session.

Mohawk Valley Community College captured a 101-90 victory over North Country in men’s college basketball.

“They’re one of the top three or four teams in the region,” Saints coach Chad LaDue said. “I thought we played extremely hard.”

North Country trailed at the half, 48-40, but managed to fight its way back to take the lead during the second.

“We took the lead with about 1:10 to go when Ege (Cinel) hit a three to put us up one,” LaDue said. “We had the ball with 12 seconds to go in the game and had a shot to win it. It was a good look, but it just didn’t fall.”

The Hawks outscored the Saints (0-2) 13-2 in the overtime session.

“I played 10 guys, rotating them in and out,” LaDue said. “We tried to keep up the pressure and keep attacking. We just ran out of gas in the overtime.

“They hit some big shots. (Lazaro Martinez) and (Shaquille Mosley) hit some big shots in overtime to seal the deal.”

Mosely finished with a game-high 29 points to lead the way for Mohawk Valley. Martinez added 24 points, while Tyquan Rolon tossed in 19. Shawn Branch tallied 10 points.

Cinel led the charge for North Country with 26 points. Michael Boyea added 20 points and six assists, while Clement Gibson finished with 11 points. Thomas Barnes chipped in with 10 points.

“I told the team we were going to find out a lot about ourselves and how much we learned from our opening night game with Clinton,” LaDue said. “We have a bunch of fighters that know how to compete.

“I am very proud of them.”

The Saints are back at it Tuesday at 7 p.m. when they take on Word of Life.
