Fox scores twice in Cardinals win over Potsdam

---- — PLATTSBURGH — Plattsburgh State called a timeout late in Friday’s second period, and coach Bob Emery was animated on the bench while Potsdam coach Chris Bernard appeared to calmly talk to his players.

You would never have guessed it was Plattsburgh that held a 3-0 lead.

Emery said he just wanted to make sure the Cardinals took that cushion into the intermission. And in fact, they added to it before the period was over.

Plattsburgh ended up with a 4-1 win over Potsdam in a SUNY Athletic Conference men’s hockey game at Stafford Ice Arena.

“As a coach, you’re in the business of correcting mistakes, so you can always find ways to improve. But it was a good, solid win,” Emery said. “I thought we had a good first period.

“I would have liked to see us play in their end more behind the goal line, and I’d like to see us do a better job with turnovers. We still had too many turnovers in our own end.”

No. 9 Plattsburgh (13-5-1, 8-1-1 SUNYAC) led 1-0 after the first period, and Jared Docking got a good chance during a Potsdam 5-on-3 early in the second. He was stopped, but while the Cardinals were still down one man, Alex Jensen left a drop pass in the slot for his brother Nick, who one-timed it into the top right corner.

Michael Cassidy also assisted on the goal, and he tapped in rebound of a Michael Radisa shot at 8:50 for a 3-0 lead.

Potsdam (6-12-1, 3-7) started to get some chances after that, and Emery called the timeout with 2:45 left.

“There was a lot of play in our zone, and we don’t like that,” Plattsburgh forward Dillan Fox said. “We’re a defense-first team. We kinda got a little too comfortable, but the timeout was huge and kinda got everybody’s head where it needed to be. After that everyone kind of buckled down.”

Fox, who put the Cardinals ahead early in the first period, netted his second of the night with 1:26 left in the second to make it 4-0. The freshman now has four goals on the season. Docking assisted on both of his markers Friday.

“Playing with Jared Docking, you get a little more space out there, and he makes great plays,” Fox said. “So he was able to find me both times. And it’s nice when I can finish them for him. Me, him and Smitty (Andrew Smith) have got some chemistry going for a few games now. We’re kinda getting to know where each other is, and tonight I was just the lucky guy.”

Potsdam’s Dan McCamey scored in the third.

Mathieu Cadieux made 24 saves for the win. Jon Hall had 37 stops in the Bears’ net.

On Military Appreciation Night, the Cardinals wore red, black and white camouflage jerseys that were auctioned off afterward. Before the game, a video presentation honored members of the military, and then Plattsburgh recognized Jason Vasco, a former player who went on to serve in the U.S. Army, and several other students and staff with military ties.

Proceeds from the auction will go to the Pat Tillman Foundation, started in memory of the former NFL player who was killed in Afghanistan in 2004.

“I had a lot of respect for Pat Tillman and what he stood for, and we just wanted to do something to give back,” Emery said.
