WATERFORD, Conn. — Virtually every race in the 2012 Plattsburgh State women’s cross country season has featured Kelley Driscoll leading the Cardinals to a high finish. That changed on Saturday when senior Amanda Schermerhorn posted a ninth-place finish at the Connecticut College Invitational to lead Plattsburgh State to a second-place finish among the 20-team field.
Schermerhorn, who hails from Glenville, traversed the six-kilometer course in a time of 22:20 and was followed by Driscoll who crossed the line in tenth place with a time of 22:24 to help the Cardinals earn their second runner-up finish in as many weeks.
By finishing in the top 15, the pair represented the Cardinals on the All-Connecticut College Invitational Team. Tufts, which finished in first place, boasted four finishers on the All-Invite team while SUNYAC for New Paltz also placed two runners on the squad as did Marywood.
Another pair of Plattsburgh State runners, Emma Deshaies and Colleen Coon, narrowly missed out on top-15 finishes. The pair crossed the finish line with an identical time of 22:36 and finished in 16th and 17th respectively in the field of 244 competitors.
Sophomore Catherine Ehmann finished in 39th place with a time of 23:23 while junior Jasmine Boncore was the only other Plattsburgh State runner to finish in the top 50. She broke the take with a time of 23:40 – good for 48th place.
Sophomore Briana Maginn rounded out the top seven finishers for the Cardinals, posting a 94th place finish in a time of 25:06.
After yet another impressive showing, the Cardinals will prepare for arguably their most important run of the season after a rest period of nearly two weeks. A road trip to Brocton, N.Y., will be in order as the Cardinals take part in the SUNYAC Championships. Fredonia State hosts the event, and Plattsburgh State will begin its quest for a SUNYAC crown at 11 a.m. on Saturday, October 27.
