Plattsburgh State women pull past Williams to stay unbeaten

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — For the second time in four days, the top-ranked Plattsburgh State women’s hockey team managed a 2-1 lead early in the second period.

To no avail, the Cardinals (12-0-1) kept their unbeaten record intact, pulling away for a 4-1 defeat of Williams College in nonconference action at the Lansing Chapman Rink Tuesday.

“I knew Williams would be a much-improved team, and I knew it’d be a tough game on the road coming off a short week,” Plattsburgh coach Kevin Houle said. “Williams really played hard and came at us. I was impressed with their team speed. They gave us all we could handle.”

The Cardinals jumped out to a two-goal lead with tallies by Jenny Kistner and Mel Ames.

The Ephs (5-6-0), however, were able to cut Plattsburgh’s lead in half when Cristina Bravi’s power-play goal hit the back of the net at 11:25 of the middle stanza.

It marked the first time Houle’s penalty-kill unit had surrendered a goal on 51 chances this season.

“That power-play goal gave them some life,” Houle said. “Fortunately, though, we were able to get that insurance goal heading into the third, which was big.”

Alyssa Parke’s sixth goal of the season helped the Cardinals regain their two-goal lead.

“The power play kind of came alive (Tuesday),” Houle said. “We’ve struggled in recent games, but were able to go 2-for-6 (Tuesday), which was a key to the game. It was a special teams battle, for sure. Both teams were in the box quite a bit. It wasn’t our best game, but we have to give them credit for playing us real hard.”

Jordan Caldwell’s tally with 11:44 remaining in regulation gave Plattsburgh a three-goal cushion and helped solidify the victory.

“Certainly, once you get a three-goal cushion, you’re feeling pretty good about things,” Houle said. “We kept pushing. It was one of those games where we didn’t have everybody going. It makes it tough sometimes.
