TROY — The Clinton Community College baseball team dropped a close one in the first game Sunday before losing both ends of a doubleheader against Hudson Valley Community College.
The Vikings held on for a 6-4 win in the opener before rolling to a 10-0, five-inning victory in the nightcap.
In the first game, the Cougars held a 6-4 advantage in hits. But Hudson Valley broke a 3-all tie with three runs in the bottom of the fifth for a 6-3 lead.
Clinton got one of the runs back in the seventh, but that would be as close as it would get.
“We battled back when we were down 3-0,” Clinton coach Tom Neale said. “Then we left the tying run at the plate in the seventh.
“We just had too many walks that hurt us.”
Nicholas Viola picked up the pitching win in relief, and Dan Shelton recorded the save.
Eric Rock went the distance in taking the loss. Jamie Davison led the Cougars with two hits, and Rock doubled.
“We played well in the first game,” Neale said. “But we need to find a way to get more hits with runners in scoring position.”
The second game wasn’t as competitive as the Vikings scored two runs in the first, second and third innings before adding four in the fourth.
“We made a couple of early errors that set the tone for the game,” Neale said.
Mike Verschelden pitched three innings in relief for the win, and Davison started and took the loss.
Davison, Joe Tolosky, Anthony Porcelli and Rock had the lone hits for the Cougars in the second contest.
The Cougars return to the diamond on Tuesday at Fulton-Montgomery Community College.
