Clinton women fall despite strong effort

PLATTSBURGH — The Clinton Community College women’s basketball team played its best game of the season in a loss to the second-ranked team in the region.

Onondaga Community College prevailed 72-63 Saturday.

“We played well the whole game,” Clinton coach Donna Dixon said. “They never had more than a 10-point lead on us, and we had it down to three points with four minutes left in the game.

“They were able to get a couple of key offensive boards. But we had only 15 turnovers, and I couldn’t be happier with how we played. It was a great game.”

Alexandra Taylor paced the Lazers, who held a 38-30 halftime lead, with 23 points. Amanda Marcely followed with 17.

Emily Decker led the Cougars (3-4) with 18 points and eight rebounds, while Alisha Ducatte added 13 points, and Katrina Garrand had 11 points, 12 assists and four steals. Ruth Paul added nine points and 15 rebounds.

“They came in averaging 82.2 points a game, and we really got after it,” Dixon said. “We had 17 assists, and that’s more than we’ve had in any game this year.

“Katrina (Garrand) and Emily (Decker) showed great leadership, and we got some good minutes from our bench. We put together 40 minutes of good basketball today, and hopefully we’ll build on it.”
