Cardinal women drop home opener

---- — PLATTSBURGH — A 10-minute lapse in the second half cost the Plattsburgh State women’s soccer team Friday afternoon.

Erika Gobielle and Julia Friesen scored goals less than three minutes apart and St. Lawrence University (3-0) recorded a 2-1 victory in the opening round of the Best Western Cardinal Classic at the Plattsburgh State Field House.

Plattsburgh (1-2) took a 1-0 lead when Emily LaLone, on a free kick just outside the 18, found the upper corner of the net with a well-placed shot that came with 1:50 left in the first half.

“We were able to get a nice timely goal,” Plattsburgh coach Karen Waterbury said. “And we were able to come out pretty strong in the second half.”

But it didn’t last.

Gobielle tied the game 10:34 into the second stanza when she tapped in a rebound. Then, shortly after at 13:20. a misplay in front of the Plattsburgh net led to Friesen’s game-winning goal.

“We didn’t take care of our possessions and didn’t play well defensively during that 10-minute stretch,” Waterbury said.

The Cardinals had an opportunity to tie the game later on, but couldn’t find the net after a scramble in front of the St. Lawrence goal.

“We came down and had a corner kick that led to a scramble in front,” Waterbury said. “That was probably our best chance to score in the second half.”

The Saints finished with a 13-10 advantage in shots and Andrea Strauss turned aside six shots in the St. Lawrence nets. Charisse Abellard finished with four stops for Plattsburgh.

“It was a good match-up for 90 minutes — St. Lawrence is a good team,” Waterbury said. “They had the size advantage over us and they started winning the 50-50 balls at midfield and that’s not good for us.

“There were some positives. We were organized better in the midfield today and were more secure at times. We still need to shoot the ball more and get better crosses.”

The Cardinals will play Bard College, a 2-0 loser to Oswego State, at 3:30 p.m. today. St. Lawrence and Oswego tangle at 1 p.m.
