Cardinals finish season with shutout of Canton

PLATTSBURGH — Tuesday night was a good way to end the season for the Plattsburgh State baseball team — especially Brian Burns.

Burns capped out an outstanding senior season by tossing a nine-inning shutout in an 8-0 non-conference victory over SUNY Canton on “Brian Mehan Be The Match Day.”

Burns allowed just one hit, walked eight and struck out seven while improving his season record to 6-3.

“Brian didn’t have his best stuff tonight, but he capped off a great senior year with a shutout,” Plattsburgh coach Kris Doorey said. “It was a good way for our seniors to end their careers. A few of our seniors had good nights at the plate.”

Shane Houppert gave the Cardinals (14-23), who closed the season with three wins in a row, the lead with a three-run homer in the bottom of the third.

Plattsburgh then broke it open with four in the fifth to take a 7-0 advantage.

Luke Weaver paced the Cardinals’ 11-hit attack with three hits, while Mike Mulvihill, Casey Brighton and Tommy Verdino added two apiece.

Nicholas Lupo chipped in with a two-out, two-run double in the four-run fifth prior to walks to Mulvihill and Houppert. Verdino also singled in the inning and Weaver added a RBI single.

Former AuSable Valley Central School standout Alex LaFountain started on the mound for the Kangaroos (12-22) and took the loss.

Gerardo Torres singled in the fourth inning for the only SUNY Canton hit.

“It’s a great event and our kids get to be the center of attention under the lights at Lefty Wilson Field,” Doorey said. “It’s fun for the players.

“But the event is more important than the game because of all the positive things that continue to come out of it.”

The event is held in honor of Mehan, a former Plattsburgh High School standout and Plattsburgh State player who lost his battle with cancer five years ago.

The ceremonial first pitch was thrown by former AuSable Valley standout Joey Painter, who was Mehan’s teammate at Plattsburgh State. Painter joined the Be The Match Registry, which donates bone marrow to a needy patient, and became a perfect match for someone.
