Cougars drop a pair in baseball, softball

PLATTSBURGH — The first leg of Tuesday’s doubleheader for the Clinton Community College baseball team was much better than the second.

The results, however, were the same.

The Cougars (3-9) dropped consecutive setbacks to Schenectady Community College 1-0 and 13-3.

In game one, the Royals (19-14) took advantage of a bases-loaded situation in the third inning and registered their lone run of the game.

“With two outs and the bases loaded, the batter tagged a ball in the gap between first and second base,” Clinton coach Tom Neale said. “Our second baseman made a diving effort, but it popped out of his glove. The run scored, but it was a tough play.

“We played very well defensively. Both teams made a few good plays. It was a good game to watch other than the fact they scored one and we didn’t. We had a runner on base in the last inning, but couldn’t get him home.”

Chris Kalica registered a complete-game performance for Schenectady, firing 11 strikeouts without allowing a walk. Anthony Porcelli was tagged with the loss.

In the nightcap, the Royals were able to generate seven runs in the first inning en route to a 10-run win.

“They hit the ball well,” Neale said. “We missed a few balls in the outfield, and it cost us at the beginning. We didn’t get many hits. We couldn’t get it going at the plate.”

The Cougars did not register an extra-base hit in the second game.
