---- — PLATTSBURGH — The Clinton Community College softball team clung to a slim lead through the first several innings Saturday, but then the Mohawk Valley offense overpowered the Cougars.
The Hawks came from behind to win 14-6 in the first game and then won 13-3 in the second. Both games ended after the sixth inning.
“I know the scores don’t do anything for us, but honestly, we came out in the first game and we were winning the first three innings. Then they opened up the floodgates in the fourth inning,” Clinton coach Sam Stoughton said. “I’m proud of them. They competed with a really, really tough team. (The Hawks) are one of the top 10 teams in the nation.”
The Cougars (0-12) scored a run in the bottom of the first inning in Game 1, and after Mohawk Valley scored five in the top of the fourth, they answered with five of their own for a 6-5 edge. Then the Hawks plated eight in the fifth to pull away.
Megan Carlo went the distance for the win and also hit a double. Brianna Georgia had another double for the Hawks.
Meg Barber doubled and singled for Clinton, and Alisha Ducatte was 2-for-3. Christine Darrah, who hit a double, suffered the pitching loss.
The Hawks led 4-1 after two innings in the second game, and they added one run in the fourth and five in the fifth. Megan Gerow pitched all six innings for the win.
Ducatte hit a double for Clinton, and Andrea Le Vien took the setback.
