---- — CANTON — Plattsburgh State baseball coach Kris Doorey saw the positives Wednesday.
Pitching, however, wasn’t one of them.
The Cardinals (9-17) allowed nine runs over the first two innings and dropped a 15-4 non-conference loss at St. Lawrence University.
“We swung the bats well and played good defense, except for the last couple of innings,” Doorey said.
“But we didn’t get any pitching at all and we’re not going to beat anyone if our starting pitcher and reliever don’t do the job.”
Carter Franz led the hitting parade for the Saints (13-8) with four hits, including a home run, triple, two doubles and three RBI.
Bryan Palermo, Brian Magovney, Jeff Kott, Kevin Prindle, Paul Piatelli and Chris Fernandez added two hits each in a 17-hit attack.
St. Lawrence jumped on Plattsburgh starter Colin Crawford and reliever Ross Levinson for four runs in the first and five more in the second.
“We gave a couple of our pitchers a chance (Wednesday) to work themselves into something and they didn’t take advantage,” Doorey said.
Despite scoring just the four runs, Plattsburgh rapped out 12 hits.
Shane Houppert led the way with two doubles, a single and two RBI. Brian Latulipe, Chris Pescetti and J.D. Springer added two hits apiece, while Ben Weightman rapped a double and RBI in his lone at bat.
“We had 12 hits and six or seven other balls that were hit hard,” Doorey said. “Offensively, I’m pretty excited with where we’re at.
“Hopefully, our conference pitchers will pitch well this weekend.”
The Cardinals return to SUNY Athletic Conference play with a 3 p.m. game on Friday and a noon doubleheader on Saturday at New Paltz.
