UTICA — The Clinton Community College men’s baseball team struggled on the mound with its control Saturday in a 9-5 and 16-6 doubleheader loss at Mohawk Valley Community College.
“Our pitchers walked way too many batters,” Clinton coach Tom Neale said. “We did swing the bats pretty well and that was a positive.”
In the opener, the Hawks held a 4-3 lead when they scored five runs in the fourth to break it open.
“It was a competitive game for three innings and then we started walking people,” Neale said.
Dalton Castine, who had a good day at the plate, led the Cougars with three hits, while losing pitcher Turner Ede added two singles and Marcus Lefebvre a double.
In the second contest, Clinton held a 1-0 lead when Mohawk Valley erupted for seven runs in the second and five more in the third.
Losing pitcher Lefebvre led the Cougars’ offense with three hits, including two doubles. Castine added two more hits and Josh Rabideau also had two singles. Chris Roenbeck and Ede each doubled.
“It was more of the same thing in the second game,” Neale said.
Clinton actually outhit Mohawk Valley by a combined 18-16 margin in the two games.
The two teams are scheduled to play a doubleheader today at Lefty Wilson Field, starting at 1 p.m.
