Cardinals comeback attempt falls short against St. Lawrence

PLATTSBURGH — The inclement weather has played havoc this season with the Plattsburgh State baseball team’s nonconference schedule, taking away playing time for the non-regulars on the squad.

Those players did get a chance to play on a cold Wednesday afternoon in an 11-7 loss to St. Lawrence University at Chip Cummings Field.

“We have some pitchers who haven’t thrown in a game in a month,” Plattsburgh coach Kris Doorey said. “We were able to give them an opportunity (Wednesday) and there was some rust. It was a little unfair to them because they haven’t thrown. But they come to practice and work hard — they deserve a chance.

“We were also able to mix a few other guys in the lineup and there were some good results. We did well offensively in a couple of innings. It was just one of those weekday games where you have players going to class or coming from class.”

The Saints (14-12) swung the bats well and finished with 14 hits off seven Plattsburgh pitchers.

Brian Magovney led the way with three hits and two RBI, while Mark Syron also had three hits. Chris Fernandez chipped in with two as St. Lawrence had nine players with at least one hit.

“St. Lawrence hasn’t been able to play any nonconference games either,” Doorey said. “But they were scoring in every inning and put pressure on us.”

Brian Latulipe, Luke Weaver and Manny Boccini paced the Cardinals’ 11-hit attack with two hits each. Latulipe scored two runs and drove in two, Weaver scored one and knocked in two and Boccini was 2-for-2. Billy Rombauts and Joe Leddy were both 1-for-1, with Rombauts getting a RBI.

St. Lawrence scored at least one run in each of the first six innings while taking an 11-3 lead.

Plattsburgh (10-20) tallied three in the fourth inning and tried to make it interesting in the seventh, scoring four times and leaving the bases loaded when the final out was recorded.

The Cardinals close out their SUNY Athletic Conference schedule with a three-game set in Oswego over the weekend.
