TROY — The North Country Community College softball team scored two runs in the top of the seventh to win its first game against Hudson Valley 5-3 Tuesday and then rapped 24 hits to take the second game 17-13.
Alexis Nichols drove in the go-ahead run in the first game, and Emily Lapage earned the pitching win in the nightcap and also had six RBI.
The early game was tied 3-3 after the fifth inning. In the seventh, Nichols hit an RBI triple and then scored on a sacrifice fly by Chelsea LaFountain to make it 5-3.
Sarah Biers scattered seven hits to pick up the win for the Saints (2-0). Taylor Fana doubled and tripled, and LaFountain and Haylea Gary also had two hits.
North Country scored five runs in the third and fourth innings of the second game to take a 10-1 lead, but Hudson Valley roared back with seven runs in the bottom of the fourth. The Saints, who never trailed, added four runs in the fifth, and Fana belted a two-run homer in the sixth to help them keep the pressure on.
“The hits just kept coming consecutively,” North Country coach Kent Egglefield said. “Everybody in our starting lineup had a hit, and most had multiple.”
Fana led the way with five hits, and Lepage and Ashley Branton each had four. Nichols hit a double and two singles, and Ariel Gardner tripled.
Lapage pitched into the fifth inning, and Biers came in to earn the save.
The Saints will visit Onondaga Community College on Saturday and Fulton-Montgomery Community College on Sunday.
