Marshall strikes out 21 in pair of wins for Plattsburgh

---- — ONEONTA — Plattsburgh State rallied from four runs down to win its first game against Oneonta on Friday and then hung onto a slim lead all the way through the second game.

Ashley Marshall earned both wins as the Cardinals swept the Red Dragons 9-5 and 3-1 in SUNY Athletic Conference softball.

“It felt good to get the two wins (Friday),” Plattsburgh coach Stephanie Zweig said. “It was a tough day to play — it was cold down here, and we spent a long time outside. But we were able to stay focused on what we were doing and came way with two wins.”

Plattsburgh (13-7) faces New Paltz today.

After the Cardinals plated a run in the top of the second in Friday’s first game, the Red Dragons scored four in the bottom half and another in the third. But Plattsburgh responded with a five-run fourth inning. Brittany Marshall singled in a run, and Oneonta walked in one. Then Brianna Clarke rapped a two-run double, and Sam Capobianco followed with an RBI single to put Plattsburgh in front 6-5.

The Cardinals added a run in the fifth and two in the seventh. Brittany Marshall ended up with two hits and three runs scored, while Capobianco totaled three hits and two RBI.

Ashley Marshall relieved starter Samantha Moss in the fourth inning and finished with seven strikeouts and no walks. Katie O’Flynn went the distance in a losing effort for the Red Dragons (3-13).

“We did what we needed to do on offense and produced some runs,” Zweig said. “Ashley came in and did what she needed to do and then pitched a great second game for us. It was a tight game, but she shut the door on them.”

The senior hurler fanned 14 without walking any in the second game, allowing three hits.

Kerry McCarty and Megan Price hit back-to-back RBI singles in the second inning to give Plattsburgh a 2-1 edge. Oneonta stayed within one until the top of the seventh, when Clarke drew a walk, forcing in an insurance run.

Price had two hits in the game. Sam Tenney hit her second double of the day, and Michelle Iannone also doubled.

Clarke finished the day with four hits and three RBI.

Rachel Hitt took the loss, walking three and striking out one in seven innings.
