PLATTSBURGH — The Clinton Community College men’s basketball team wasted no time putting points on the board in its season opener Monday.
The Cougars jumped out to a 48-18 halftime lead before adding 39 points in the second half in an 87-48 rout over Word of Life Bible Institute.
Bayron Carter finished with 15 points and 10 rebounds, while Mykelle Krecko added 10 points and 10 rebounds in the victory.
“Everybody got a lot of playing time, which is always nice,” Clinton coach Kevin Daugherty said. “We shot the ball pretty well. Tom Ryan was 7-for-8 from the field.”
Ryan, a former 1,000-point scorer at Beekmantown, accumulated 15 points in his Cougars debut. Jonathan Lamboy was one of four Clinton players to account for double-digit scoring, totaling 12 points.
Jamie Davison recorded nine points and five steals, while Kyree Hull (eight), Jalik Banks (eight) and Brian Ortiz (six) combined for 22 points.
Krecko had five assists, while Hull snagged four steals on the defensive side of the basketball.
Daugherty, however, said his team needs to do a better job in transition in preparation for North Country Community College Wednesday.
“We’re going to have to do a much better job getting back on defense,” Daugherty said. “North Country does a great job pushing it in a hurry. Our second-year guys know that it’s going to be a totally different atmosphere. It’s a great rivalry and will be a completely different game than what we had (Monday).”
Carter had the hot hand for the Cougars, connecting on two 3-pointers from the perimeter.
Justin Cousins was the high scorer for Word of Life, firing 15 points.
