---- — NEW PALTZ — Plattsburgh State struggled to hit in its first game Saturday at New Paltz and then managed 12 hits in the nightcap but still came up short.

The Hawks blanked the Cardinals 3-0 before outlasting them 11-8 in a SUNY Athletic Conference softball doubleheader.

In the opener, Chelsea Kull singled in a run in the first inning, and Andrea Feeney hit a two-run single in the third. That was all the scoring the Hawks (15-6, 8-0 SUNYAC) needed, as Amber Carozza held the Cardinals to two hits — singles by Michelle Iannone and Brittany Marshall. Carozza threw three strikeouts and two walks in seven innings.

Samantha Moss took the loss for Plattsburgh, surrendering seven hits in 2 2/3 innings. Ashley Marshall took over in the third.

The Cardinals (12-10, 4-4) plated a couple of runs in the second inning of the second game, but New Paltz responded with two of its own in the bottom half and then added one each in the third and fourth.

Plattsburgh scored three in the top of the fifth to take the lead, but the Hawks again answered, pushing across three runs to pull in front 7-5. Then they had a four-run sixth.

Marissa Monaco and Meg Brewer rapped back-to-back RBI doubles, followed by an RBI single from Kull. Noelle Grande later singled in another run.

The Cardinals mounted a comeback attempt in the seventh, scoring three runs, but the inning ended with a fly out with one runner on base.

Katie Rutcofsky pitched all seven innings to earn the win, striking out five and walking four while giving up 12 hits.

The Hawks totaled 16 hits in the game, led by Kull with three hits and three RBI, and Monaco with three hits and two RBI.

Ashley Marshall allowed 11 of those hits as she pitched into the fifth inning and suffered the loss. Morgan Anderson threw two innings of relief.

Brianna Clarke led Plattsburgh at the plate, going 3-for-5, while Kerry McCarty had two hits and drove in three runs.

After starting the season 7-5 in Florida, the Cardinals have gone 5-5 in New York. They’ve already matched their SUNYAC loss total (four) from last season.
