---- — CORTLAND — Seven different players scored goals to lead the Plattsburgh State women’s hockey team to a 7-1 win over Cortland State Saturday afternoon in ECAC West action at Alumni Arena.

The first-ranked Cardinals (18-0-1, 11-0 ECAC West) built a 3-0 lead after the first period as Jenny Kistner, Andrea Ziesmann and Shannon Stewart each scored.

“We wanted to get out to a good start and win the game in the first period,” Plattsburgh coach Kevin Houle said. “I think we accomplished that scoring three goals. It certainly didn’t put them away, but it took the life out of them.”

The Cardinals added two goals, both on the power play from Giovanna Senese and Alyssa Parke, in the second period for a 5-0 advantage while outshooting the Red Dragons 26-3.

“I thought the second period was our best period of the hockey game,” Houle said. “We had quality opportunities, and it was a solid effort. It’s good to our players go out and not take these games for granted.”

Senior captain Teal Gove opened the third with a power-play goal 30 seconds into the period before Cortland’s Maggie Giamo netted a short-handed marker 47 seconds later with a shot from the far-side circle. Ali Vakos completed the scoring with a one-timer in front at 11:14.

Senese led the Cardinals with one goal and two assists. Kistner, Parke and Ziesmann each had one goal and one assist. Gove, Vakos and Stewart netted one tally a piece. Sophomore goalie Ally Ross stopped seven of the eight shots she faced.

“We did some different things throughout the course of the weekend with our lineup,” Houle said. “We made some changes and moved some kids around for both games to look at different line combinations. I was pleased with a lot of them. (Senese) had a nice game and is really coming into her own.”

Freshman goalie Deanna Meunier made a career-high 58 saves in the loss for the Red Dragons

Plattsburgh racked up 65 shots on the afternoon, while Cortland was held to eight. The Cardinals went 4-for-5 with the extra skater, while the Red Dragons (4-13-1, 4-8) were 0-for-2.

The Cardinals return home Wednesday for their final nonconference game of the regular season against Middlebury.

“Earlier in the year, we didn’t have time to prep for (Middlebury) because of our game with Amherst,” Houle said. “This weekend, we have a few days, and we have a lot to prepare for. We’ll have a day off (today), and we’ll be back at it (Monday).”
