CLERMONT, Fla. — Samantha Moss and Ashley Marshall combined on a two-hitter Sunday to lead the Plattsburgh State women’s softball team past Babson College, 4-1, in the National Training Center Spring Games.
The Cardinals (3-1) then made it a sweep on the day by hanging on for an 8-7 decision over Amherst College.
Against Babson, the freshman Moss got the pitching start and fared much better than she did the day before. She allowed one hit, one run and two walks in going the first three innings.
Marshall then took over and was her usual dominant self, allowing one hit, no walks and striking out six in going four scoreless innings for the victory.
Babson (2-1) took the lead with a run in the top of the first inning when Catie Funk scored on a wild pitch. Plattsburgh got the run back in the bottom of the second on a RBI single by Megan Price.
It stayed 1-all until the bottom of the sixth when the Cardinals tallied three unearned runs off losing pitcher Megan Brain. Kerry McCarty singled in a run, while Price singled in two more.
Kristin Nabor and Price led Plattsburgh with two hits each, while Kristine Gay, Brianna Clarke and McCarty chipped in with one apiece.
In the win over Amherst, the Cardinals fell behind 2-0 and then 5-3 early on before rallying for a 6-5 lead in the fifth inning. The Lord Jeffs tied it in the home half of the inning, but Plattsburgh regained the lead for good with two in the sixth.
Amherst got to within one in the bottom of the sixth, but that would be the end of the scoring.
No other information or box score of the game was made available.
The Cardinals play two more games today — at 11 a.m. against New England College and at 1 p.m. versus Plymouth State.
