Double trouble for CCC soccer

PLATTSBURGH — The Clinton Community College women’s soccer team surrendered just two goals over the weekend.

But the Cougars’ inability to find the back of the net resulted in two 1-0 losses, the second being Sunday’s setback to SUNY Delhi at the Plattsburgh State Field House Soccer Complex.

Alyssa Gulino scored on a penalty kick with 6:51 left in regulation to give the Broncos the win.

“It was the right call — it was blatant,” Clinton assistant coach Gena Rosenbaum said.

“The weather was awful and it evened out the playing field. I knew one goal would win the game, like it did yesterday, but we can’t score.”

Delhi held a 20-6 advantage in shots and Courtney Backus played well in net for Clinton with 17 saves. Lauren Renaud recorded the shutout with five stops.

“We played well as a team and stood up defensively,” Rosenbaum said. “We had only 13 players available and some of them are hurting after the tough game the day before. I’m happy with the entire team’s effort. It’s just tough to lose another 1-0 game.

“With the chances we had, we obviously didn’t capitalize on them. Our best chance came in the second half when Kiley Wilkins got a thru ball and hit the crossbar with her shot. We just need to score first in a game, but we’re unable to do so.”

The Cougars are at Broome Community College on Saturday.
