Herkimer gets the best of North Country in college soccer

---- — SARANAC LAKE — The North Country Community College women’s soccer team struggled defensively as it dropped a 2-1 decision to Herkimer County Community College Wednesday.

“We got tired and lazy,” North Country coach Kent Egglefield said. “The first 10 minutes was about all we did for playing well. It was probably our worst defensive effort of the season. If it wasn’t for Emily (Lapage), it would’ve been worse.”

Chelsea Lafountain gave North Country a 1-0 lead 3:17 into the game. But Danielle Nicosia tied it in the middle of the first half. Then Kalli Warmingham scored the go-ahead goal 3:45 into the second.

The Generals outshot the Saints 23-11, and Kristi Bills had to make just two saves for the win.

“We didn’t pick it back up again until five minutes left in the game, and then we just couldn’t put one in,” Egglefield said.

Lapage had 16 stops in a strong effort for North Country (5-5).

SARANAC LAKE — Jermaine Windster had two goals and an assist to lead the Herkimer men’s team to a victory.

“Herkimer is a very good team — ranked first in the nation. So we knew we were going to have to pick up our defense in (Wednesday’s) game,” North Country coach Adam DiVincenzo said. “They scored on three defensive errors. Overall we followed the game plan pretty well.”

Windster tallied just over 14 minutes into the game and against at 42:47. He then assisted on James Wilson’s goal with 47 seconds left in the first half.

Triston Henry made three saves for Herkimer. Drew Garnaut also had three for North Country.

“Herkimer is a team that could beat you 9-1 if you’re not careful,” DiVincenzo said. “So I thought we played pretty well today.”

The Saints (4-3-1) host Adirondack Community College on Sunday.
