Mohawk Valley defeats North Country in women's soccer

---- — UTICA — Sylvana Giovenone and Megan Carlo tallied first-half goals to help give Mohawk Valley Community College a 2-1 win over North Country Community College in women’s soccer Saturday.

Giovenone scored just 36 seconds into the game, and Carlo added her goal at the 8:17 mark.

Chelsea Lafountain’s goal cut the North Country (5-3) deficit in half with 12:04 remaining in regulation.

The hosts finished with a 24-13 shot advantage, and Emily Lapage made 11 saves in the Saints’ nets.

“It was the best performance I’ve seen from Emily,” North Country coach Kent Egglefield said. “She was awesome today.

“If we hadn’t come out so flat, it could have been different. But I’m happy with how we played — our defense and midfield were really strong.”

The Saints play a 3:30 p.m. game at Onondaga Community College today.
