---- — PLATTSBURGH — North Country Community College came out of the gates fast Wednesday and Clinton Community College spent the rest of the game playing catch-up.

The Saints scored two goals in the first 8:20 of the game and held off a comeback bid from the Cougars for a 4-3 victory in men’s junior college soccer.

“The first 10 minutes belonged to North Country,” Clinton coach Gene Bushey said. “We settled in during the rest of the half.

“The defensive lapse in the first half put us down 2-0 and we fought back to tie it up, but we played catch-up the whole game.”

Winterson Joesph scored an unassisted goal at the 4:03 mark of the first half to give the Saints an early 1-0 lead. Jaime Flores-Castellon found the back of the net on an assist from Kane Morgan to make it a two-goal lead early on.

But, there was no quit in the Cougars.

Kyle McCarthy pulled Clinton (0-3-2) to within one on an assist from Daniel Escobar at the 18:2 mark of the first half. Then, McCarthy tied the game at two just over a minute later.

“We played very well,” Bushey said. “I was satisfied with the second half of the first half.”

Joseph netted his second goal of the game to start the second half, but Clinton answered right back with a goal from Matt Follett.

John O’Sullivan, though, sent in the game-winner at the 12:11 mark of the second half. Justin Kellett picked up the assist.

“We just couldn’t capitalize on their mistakes,” Bushey said. “(North Country) played well and it was a good game to watch. Both teams are very compatible … it could have gone either way.

“It was a good game, but it was a tough game to play when you’re playing catch-up.”

Adam Goldfarb made 15 saves for the Cougars in the loss. Drew Garnaut turned away 12 shots for the Saints.

Clinton will host Herkimer Community College Sunday at Plattsburgh State for a 4:30 p.m. kickoff. North Country travels to Mohawk Valley for a 3 p.m. game on Saturday.

PLATTSBURGH — Things didn’t exactly start out well for the Cougars.

Clinton Community College gave up an own goal at the 9:40 mark of the first half and couldn’t break through offensively in a loss to the Saints.

Epril Nossent scored with just 48 seconds left in the first half to give North Country Community College a two-goal advantage at the half.

She tallied again on a direct kick just 1:17 into the second half to close the scoring.

“The third goal was a really good shot that went right under the crossbar,” Cougars assistant coach Gena Rosenbaum said. “(Courtney Backus) did a really good job and made some really nice saves for us.

“I thought our defense played a really good game and held us together even though (North Country) had some pretty good shots.”

The Saints outshot Clinton, 18-6, in the game.

According to Rosenbaum, the Cougars had some chances but just couldn’t finish on them.

“Kiley Wilkins ran the middle of the field for us and distributed the ball well,” Rosenbaum said. “She gave us a lot of opportunities up top. Stephanie White created a lot of scoring chances, but we just couldn’t finish.”

Shannon Bombard was also credited with a strong game in the back for Clinton (2-5).

“They played well,” Rosenbaum said. “Our team as a whole fought hard. North Country is a physical team, but we kept our cool and we played strong the whole 90 minutes. I am happy with that.”

Samantha Ghostlaw made four saves in goal for the Saints to pickup the shutout win. Backus made 11 saves in the loss for Clinton.

Clinton will play Herkimer Community College at 2 p.m. at Plattsburgh State Sunday. North Country will travel to Mohawk Valley for a 1 p.m. contest Saturday.
