McClelland lifts PSU in OT

PLATTSBURGH — Brett McClelland completed a hat trick with 1:51 left in overtime to lift the Plattsburgh State lacrosse team to a hard-fought 8-7 win over Clarkson on Wednesday.

In a back-and-forth game, Plattsburgh’s Joey Kramer got things going at the 9:01 mark of the first quarter with an unassisted goal, but Clarkson retaliated at 5:31 with a goal from Mark Nortz. The two sides swapped goals once more to close out the quarter tied at 2-2.

A shot by Cardinals’ midfielder Tom Duggan found the back of the net at 11:32 of the second quarter to give Plattsburgh State a 3-2 lead, but Clarkson was able to silence the Cardinals’ offense for the rest of the quarter.

Back-to-back goals by Jack Dowst and Brendon Shearin gave the Golden Knights their only lead of the evening and they ended the half up 4-3.

The 18th-ranked Cardinals (8-1) owned the third quarter, scoring three to take the only two-goal lead of the day. Kramer knotted the score at 4-4 with an unassisted marker at 13:02 of the third before McClelland scored the next two.

Clarkson (4-3) responded with a pair of goals to open the final stanza, including a man-up goal by Corey Herrington at the 5:24 mark, to even the score again.

Tim Lawrence scored his 10th of the year at 3:26 off a feed from Kramer to give the Cardinals a late 7-6 lead, but the Golden Knights’ Shearin answered right back with 2:45 left to force overtime.

Plattsburgh was the only team to generate any offensive opportunities in the overtime. Clarkson goalkeeper Ryan Cole made two stops on shots by McClelland and Kramer before McClelland beat Cole with the game-winner .

McClelland and Kramer each totaled three points while Duggan added a goal and an assist. Defensively, Charlie Dullea had a solid game for Plattsburgh with a team-high six caused turnovers.
