---- — BALTIMORE, Md. — The 19the-ranked Plattsburgh State lacrosse team began a tough stretch in the schedule with a 7-5 victory against 17th-ranked Connecticut College Wednesday afternoon at Homewood Field on the campus of John Hopkins University.
With the win, the Cardinals improved to 7-0 on the season.
Chad Sawyer opened the scoring for Connecticut College at the 11:04 mark of the first quarter with a man-up goal from JR Hartgers. Plattsburgh answered back when Tim Lawrence converted on a breakaway off a failed clear by the Camels with 4:07 left in the opening quarter.
The Cardinals took their first lead just seven seconds into the second quarter on a Joey Kramer goal, but Connecticut College quickly responded at 13:07 with a goal by Andrew Freedman.
Lawrence buried his second of the day at 10:19 to put Plattsburgh up 3-2, but Freedman struck again at the 1:33 mark to even the score again. Plattsburgh had the last word in the half when Lawrence completed the hat trick with 27 seconds left to give the Cardinals a 4-3.
Connecticut College (2-2) knotted the score again at 11:59 of the third quarter on Sawyer’s second of the game, but two quick goals from Tom Duggan and Brett McClelland gave the Cardinals the lead for good.
Freedman completed a hat trick of his own with 5.7 seconds left in the third quarter to bring the Camels within one.
Plattsburgh Brendan Damm scored the lone goal of the fourth quarter on a wrap-around shot with 1:38 remaining.
Kramer finished the day with a goal and two assists while Duggan and McClelland each added two points. Damm scored his team-leading 19th goal of the year and continues to pace the Cardinals’ offense with 28 points.
Nick Travers scooped up a game-high 10 ground balls and won 9-of-16 faceoffs. Senior Mike Lind had a team-high five caused turnovers.
The Cardinals outshot the Camels 45-27 and successfully completed 21-of-26 clear attempts.
Plattsburgh wraps up its spring trip Saturday at noon in a nonconference game against the University of Mary Washington.
