Saints beat Elmira JV

---- — ELMIRA — The North Country Community College men’s basketball team used balanced scoring and strong outside shooting to defeat the Elmira JV team 82-55 Thursday.

Steve Carder scored a game-high 17 points, and Ian Henderson was right behind him with 16. Steven Poulter scored 13, Michael Boyea added 11 and Jared Heden had 10. The Saints knocked down 14 3-pointers.

“We got off to a really good start in the first half,” North Country coach Chad LaDue said. “Henderson, Poulter and Heden combined for eight 3-pointers in the first half. We really shared the basketball. In the second, we were able to get everybody an opportunity to play.”

The Saints were played their first game in 37 days and were without guard Brody Douglass, who is out four to six weeks with a broken hand.

The Bobcats held a 34-28 halftime lead.

“After getting off to a slow start, we picked up our defensive pressure and went on a nice run in the final seven minutes of the first half,” Paul Smith’s coach Joe Akey said. “Our transition offense, which was generated by our defense, was the key during the stretch.

“In the second half, we pushed the lead up to 15 points and I thought we were going to extend it. But Northern Maine came right back on a mini-run. Late in the game, our halfcourt offense helped take time off the clock and eliminate any opportunity for Northern Maine to cut our lead any fewer than eight.”
