HERKIMER — The Herkimer Community College baseball team completed a weekend sweep of doubleheaders from Clinton Community College by posting identical 12-1 victories on Sunday.
In the first game, the Generals (15-5) held a 3-1 lead after three innings and broke it open with seven in the fourth. Then, in the nightcap, the hosts held a 5-1 advantage before scoring seven in the sixth.
Adam Goldfarb and Robert Mejia accounted for the two Cougars’ hits in the opener, with Goldfarb’s single driving in Clinton’s run.
Dalton Castine pitched into the fourth inning and took the loss. Lucas Godlewski tossed a two-hitter in going the five innings for the win.
Mejia rapped out two more hits in the second game, one driving in the Cougars’ run. Marcus Lefebve and Chris Roenbeck added singles.
Losing pitcher Murray Ruggiero allowed a run in the first and four in the second before tossing three scoreless innings in a row before tiring.
“Ruggiero pitched pretty well for five innings,” Clinton coach Tom Neale said. “We made a couple of errors in the second inning that hurt him and led to runs. He ran out of gas in the sixth.
“We had some defensive mistakes — some throwing errors — and we didn’t get a lot of hits. But we swung the bats better today and hit some line drives that they made the plays on.”
The Cougars (0-6) are scheduled to play a doubleheader on Tuesday at Hudson Valley Community College.
