QUEENSBURY — A 13-run first inning plagued the Clinton Community College softball team in its season opener at the Adirondack Sports Complex Tuesday.
After pushing across 13 runs in the first inning, SUNY Adirondack added six more in a 19-5 defeat of the Cougars (0-1, 0-1).
“If we could erase that first inning, that would be nice,” Clinton coach Sami Stoughton said. “It was our first time playing another team, so it was an unfortunate start. Truthfully, we had a few errors right off the bat. Our pitchers surrendered a lot of walks right from the get-go. I was hoping we would get ourselves out of it, but I had to switch pitchers in the first inning. That stuff happens.
“But we came out of it. I can’t be mad at them because it didn’t go all downhill from there.”
The Cougars regrouped, scoring five times and adding five hits during their final five innings at the plate.
Shannon Bombard recorded Clinton’s only extra-base hit, a double. Lyndale Nephew added two singles.
“My girls battled back,” Stoughton said. “They were hitting the ball, but weren’t successfully getting on base. In the last inning, we unfortunately left two runners on.”
Sara Peck was the winning pitcher in the 14-run game, while Olivia Furnia was tagged with the loss.
The Cougars were scheduled to challenge Finger Lakes Community College Sunday, but the twinbill has been postponed. The team will travel to Fulton-Montgomery Community College for a doubleheader Tuesday.
“I’m going to try and get a few pitchers from around the area to come help us out,” Stoughton said. “We’ll find a field somewhere and have the girls see some live pitching outdoors.
“But I’m proud of the effort (Tuesday). I know the score doesn’t show it, but they battled back and showed they deserve to be playing at this level. They didn’t give up. They worked hard.”
