Plattsburgh State lacrosse meets Cortland

CORTLAND — After knocking off nationally-ranked St. Lawrence University on Wednesday, the Plattsburgh State men’s lacrosse team sets its sights even higher today.

The Cardinals (8-2, 1-0), who have been receiving votes in the national Division III poll, are at SUNY Athletic Conference power Cortland (7-3, 1-0) in a 1 p.m. showdown.

Plattsburgh defeated the Saints, 16-12, at home and will play a Cortland team that is ranked eighth in the country and coming off an 8-7 overtime victory at No. 11 Ithaca College on Matt Piercey’s goal.

The Red Dragons are outscoring their opponents, 104-69, and are led in scoring by Zach Hopps (16-12-28), Nate Garbarino (12-11-23) and Matt Rakoczy (12-9-21).

Two of Cortland’s losses this season were one-goal decisions in Maryland to Lynchburg and Stevenson.

The Red Dragons recorded a 15-12 regular season win over the Cardinals last season in Plattsburgh and then captured the SUNYAC Tournament championship with a 9-2 home win over Plattsburgh.

The Cardinals have a 115-77 scoring edge over their opponents and are being led in scoring by Brendan Damm (28-4-32), Robbie Ashlaw (16-13-29) and Tom Duggan (12-10-22).
