POTSDAM — Shannon Stewart scored four goals as the top-ranked Plattsburgh State women’s hockey team rolled to an 8-0 victory over Potsdam in an ECAC West matchup at the Maxcy Ice Arena Tuesday.
With the win, Plattsburgh improved to 3-0 on the year and 1-0 in conference play. Potsdam dropped to 1-1 overall and 0-1 in the league.
Stewart scored the game-winning goal at the 11:07 mark of the first period from Emma Rutherford and the Cardinals never looked back.
After the team started 0-for-5 on the one-player advantage this season, Jenny Kistner scored her first of the evening on the power play at 13:48 from Bridget Balisy, giving Plattsburgh a two-goal lead to take to the locker room.
“We didn’t get a lot of quality looks (on the power play) over the weekend, so it was certainly nice to get back on track (Tuesday),” Plattsburgh coach Kevin Houle said.
With just 4:44 gone in the second period, Stewart cashed in a power-play opportunity to make it 3-0 before striking again less than two minutes later to complete the hat trick and give the Cardinals a 4-0 advantage.
“We finally just wore the goalie down with a lot of opportunities and shots,” Houle said. “We got a pretty good cushion, but the kids kept working and playing hard. The intensity was there and that’s what we were looking for. We finished and played well five-on-five, too.”
It was Allison Era’s turn at the start of the third period as the senior defenseman recorded the next Plattsburgh goal. Era finished the evening with one goal and two assists.
Ali Vakos scored her first of the year at 16:29 from Jordan Caldwell before Stewart found the back of the net for the fourth time of the night at 19:20 to round out the scoring.
Rutherford, Balisy, Jordan Lipson and Julia Duquette each contributed two assists in the win.
The Cardinals finished the night with a 57-11 edge in shots on goal. Plattsburgh went 2-for-7 on the power play, while Potsdam went 0-for-4.
Sydney Aveson earned her third-straight shutout with 11 saves. Potsdam’s Alexane Rodrigue stopped 49 shots in the loss.
Plattsburgh makes its home debut at 3 p.m. in a non-conference game against Castleton at the Stafford Ice Arena Saturday.
It will mark the Cardinals’ fourth game in seven days.
“They’re going to be fine,” Houle said. “Being the third game in four days, this was the game we were worried about. The girls will get the day off (Wednesday) and go back to work Thursday and Friday.
“Castleton is a good hockey team. They took Oswego to overtime, and they’re getting better every year. They’re going to arrive ready to play.”
