FREDONIA — The Plattsburgh State women’s soccer team didn’t help its SUNY Athletic Conference Tournament chances this weekend.
The Cardinals dropped a 2-1 setback at Fredonia on Saturday.
It was the second-straight loss over the weekend for the Cardinals (4-9-2, 2-4-1), who dropped a tough 2-1 overtime decision at Buffalo State the day before.
Three of the four losses for the Cardinals in conference play have been by one goal, including two decided in overtime.
Plattsburgh closes out conference regular season play this coming weekend, hosting The College of Brockport on Friday and Geneseo on Saturday.
Two wins and the Cardinals are in.
“We’re at home and we control our own destiny,” Plattsburgh coach Karen Waterbury said. “We just have to figure it out.”
Kristie Kleine scored the game-winning goal for the Blue Devils (4-9-2, 2-4-1) with 14:30 gone in the second half, breaking a 1-all tie.
Fredonia took a 1-0 lead at 21:01 of the first half on Alexis Moreland’s goal.
But with 5:39 remaining in the opening half, Vicky Scott drew the Cardinals even with an unassisted goal.
“It was a great end-to-end game,” Waterbury said. “There were good chances on both sides.
“We battled back once when we fell behind, 1-0, and hit two crossbars in the first half. We also battled after they took the 2-1 lead in the second half. I felt we responded after they went ahead again, but they have some good team speed.”
Fredonia ended with an 18-13 advantage in shots and Hannah McGlinchey was in net for the win with eight saves. Kristy Kirkpatrick stopped seven shots in the Plattsburgh nets.
“They blocked a lot of shots,” Waterbury said. “We just have to find that consistency. It’s not like we’re getting beat badly in conference games — our conference games have been close ones where I feel we could have won.”
