SCRANTON, Pa. — The Plattsburgh State men’s lacrosse team saved its best for last Saturday afternoon.
The score was tied at 7-all before the Cardinals (6-2) rattled off the final four goals of the game for an 11-7 victory over the University of Scranton (5-3) in nonconference play.
Brendan Damm and Tom Duggan combined for seven of Plattsburgh goals, with Damm finishing with four.
The hosts held a 6-5 halftime lead, only to have Damm and James Read tally in the third to rally the Cardinals into a 7-6 advantage.
Then with just 42 seconds gone in the fourth, Matt Tibbitts’ goal pulled Scranton even. The rest of the contest, however, belonged to Plattsburgh.
Robbie Ashlaw scored the game-winner with 7:15 remaining, and the Cardinals quickly added to their advantage when Duggan tallied with 6:18 left and Damm with 5:32 remaining. Duggan added Plattsburgh’s final goal with less than a minute left.
The Royals grabbed a 3-1 lead in the first period, with Damm scoring the lone goal for the Cardinals.
The two teams then combined for seven goals in a high-scoring second period, with Damm, Read, Joe Eiseman and Duggan scoring for Plattsburgh. The Cardinals came back to take a 4-3 edge before Scranton rattled off three goals in a row.
Andrew Hauk made seven saves in the Plattsburgh nets, and Nicholas McKabe stopped 11 shots for Scranton. Both teams took 34 shots.
Gus Sturm led the hosts with three goals, and four other players chipped in with one each.
The Cardinals return home before playing at Clarkson on Wednesday.
