Farmingdale keeps Cardinals winless

FARMINGDALE — For the second day in a row, the Plattsburgh State baseball team got a strong pitching performance in the second game of a doubleheader.

The Cardinals (0-4), however, dropped a 12-3 and 2-0 twinbill at Farmingdale State on Sunday in nonconference play in the SUNYAC/Skyline Challenge.

Will Flynn, making his first-career start for Plattsburgh, allowed just three hits, walked three and struck out five in taking the second-game loss.

“Will had a really good start for us,” Plattsburgh coach Kris Doorey said. “He battled against a team that will most likely be in a NCAA Tournament regional. Will put us in a position to win.”

Flynn surrendered both runs in the fifth inning. The former Peru standout got the first two outs, would eventually give up Tom Rydzewski’s 2-run triple.

Meanwhile the Cardinals’ bats were cold as winning pitcher Matt Seelinger, who went the first five innings, and reliever Alex Pagourelias, who picked up the save, combined to allow just two hits.

Nicholas Lupo and Jeremy Rodriquez accounted for the lone Plattsburgh hits.

“Lupo and Rodriquez swung the bat well for us,” Doorey said.

The first game was also close until the bottom of the sixth. That’s when the Rams (3-1) erupted for eight runs.

Scott Orr started on the mound for the Cardinals and took the loss. Plattsburgh, which played strong defense the day before in a doubleheader loss to St. Joseph’s, Long Island, hurt its cause with six errors.

“Orr’s line doesn’t look good, but he gave up three runs in the third inning when we made four errors,” Doorey said. “He kept battling.

“When they broke the game open in the sixth inning, we hit five of their hitters with pitches. They only had three hits in the inning.”

Lupo paced the Cardinals’ 8-hit offense with three hits, while Rodriquez added two. Frank Buksa, Luke Weaver and Shane Houppert chipped in with a hit apiece. Jonathan Repetto, Buksa and Houppert drove in runs.
