Cardinals go 2-0 at Land of Magic Classic

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — The Plattsburgh State men’s basketball team’s visit to Florida tuned into a very successful one.

The Cardinals (6-2), on the heels of Sunday night’s 71-68 win over Millikin University, rolled to a 62-40 victory over the University of Wisconsin-Stout on Monday to close out their play 2-0 in the Land of Magic Classic.

“We beat two teams from two of the better recognized (Division III) conferences,” Plattsburgh coach Tom Curle said. “It was a good weekend for us and our guys were able to represent the college and community very well.”

Monday, the Cardinals shot just 7-for-22 from the field and got outrebounded, 23-8, in the first half against the Blue Devils.

Still, Plattsburgh managed to take a 22-19 halftime lead and Curle wasn’t disappointed with the effort.

“It was hard fought in the first half,” he said. “There was a high level of intensity and a great desire to win on the part of both teams.

“But we were trying to attack the rim too much. We needed to start hitting some jumpers and then attack the rim.

“It appeared we got outrebounded by a wide margin, but that’s deceiving. We played great defense and forced them into 15 turnovers in the first half. Nine of the turnovers were steals. When you’re forcing an opponent into that many turnovers, you’re not going to be getting rebounds.”

The Cardinals then outscored the Blue Devils (7-4) by a combined 40-21 over the final 20 minutes to pull away to their 22-point victory.

“We pressured them defensively all game long to earn their shots — and I was very pleased with that,” Curle said. “In the second half, we hit shots.”

Shamoy McIntosh played a strong game for the Cardinals with a game-high 22 points, including four 3-pointers, and a team-high seven rebounds.
