PLATTSBURGH — The high-powered offense of the Plattsburgh State men’s lacrosse team was on full display Saturday afternoon as the Cardinals defeated Norwich, 17-3, in the season opener at the Field House Turf Complex.
The Cardinals (1-0) rattled off three goals in the first five minutes to gain a quick edge on the Cadets (0-1). Tom Monahan got the offense going just 1:50 into the game before James Higgins and Josh Oliver followed to make it 3-0 in favor of the home team. Norwich got on the board at the 9:56 mark of the first quarter on an Ian Mendoza goal from Ryan McCarthy but Plattsburgh State’s Tim Lawrence scored the next two to put the Cardinals up 5-1 at the end of the first.
Plattsburgh State controlled the second quarter as Matt Renko and Anthony Pafundi each scored a pair of goals. Senior transfer Robbie Ashlaw added his first Cardinal goal in the second, helping to give the Cardinals a 10-1 lead at the half.
Oliver opened the third quarter with two goals before the Cadets answered back with Connor Roberts’ first of the season. Higgins’ netted Plattsburgh State’s 13th of the afternoon at the 6:24 mark of the third before Oliver scored his fourth of the game with 4:43 left in the quarter. Lawrence closed out the quarter with a man-down and a man-up goal to give him four goals on the afternoon and extend the Cardinals’ lead to 16-2 after three quarters.
Plattsburgh State got one more in the fourth with sophomore midfielder Mitchell LaBianca scoring his first of the season to round out the Cardinal offense. The Cadets closed out the afternoon with Mendoza’s second of the game to reach the 17-3 final.
The Cardinals outshot the Cadets, 60-16. Plattsburgh State picked up 35 ground balls while Norwich finished the day with 31. Plattsburgh State went 2-for-2 on extra-man opportunities while Norwich went 0-for-3.
