Cardinals double up in Pittsburgh

PITTSBURGH — Jordan’s Caldwell’s goal in the second period served as the game-winner as the No. 1 Plattsburgh State women’s hockey team defeated Chatham University, 5-2, in ECAC West play Sunday.

After putting up four points Saturday, Bridget Balisy sparked the offense in Sunday’s game, scoring the Cardinals’ (21-1-1, 13-1-0) first two goals. Balisy put Plattsburgh on the board at the 8:41 mark of the first period with an assist before making it a 2-0 game at 13:32 with a power-play goal from Giovanna Senese and Tyne Gove.

The Cougars (4-17-2, 3-11-0) fought their way back into the game, cutting the Cardinals’ lead in half when Brianna Rice scored her 10th of the year at 15:13 of the first. Chatham tied it up at 2-all just 21 seconds into the second period on Katrina Hawkins’ eighth of the season from Rice.

“This was a little more of a struggle (Sunday), but our goal was to come out with four points, and we were able to do that,” Plattsburgh coach Kevin Houle said.

Despite the brief scare, it was all Plattsburgh the rest of the way with Caldwell netting the go-ahead goal on the power play at 4:32 of the second. Allison Era picked up an assist on Caldwell’s 11th of the year.

Chelsea VanGlahn found the back of the net with 14 seconds left in the middle frame to give the Cardinals a two-goal lead before Gove rounded out the scoring with her fifth of the year at the 2:30 mark of the third.

“After being tied, we outshot them 25-2 for the rest of that second period,” Houle said. “At first, it was an uneasy feeling until that two-goal cushion, for sure. We had more of a struggle for whatever reason. We came out flat and maybe a little tired. But we were able to put the pressure on them and pull away.”
