Cards win SUNYAC Tourney opener

BROCKPORT — Plattsburgh State scored three runs in the bottom of the third inning Thursday to pull ahead of Geneseo and then stayed in front the rest of the way to open the SUNY Athletic Conference softball tournament with a 7-4 win.

The third-seeded Cardinals gave up two runs in the first inning and another in the top of the third to fall behind 3-2.

“At that point we had let the runs come in, and we were sick of it and decided to take charge,” Plattsburgh coach Stephanie Zweig said. “We did well offensively all day; we were consistent. Every time Genseo scored, we came back.”

Plattsburgh (23-14) will meet No. 2 seed Cortland this morning.

After doubling to lead off the third, Brianna Clarke scored on Megan Price’s single to tie the game. Then Samantha Capobianco doubled in the go-ahead, and the Cardinals added another run on a fielder’s choice to make it 5-3.

Plattsburgh scored on an error in the fourth, and Brittany Marshall drove in another run in the sixth.

Ashley Marshall pitched the whole game, striking out 10, walking one and giving up six hits.

Capobianco went 2-for-3 with two RBI, and Brittany Marshall was 3-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored.

“Brittany did a little bit of what we’re used to seeing from her; she was able to get on base whatever way she could,” Zweig said. Sam Cap being a DP, that’s her job — to get hits. She did what we needed in a good spot.”

Price also had two hits and two RBI for Plattsburgh.

Corrin Spallone allowed 10 hits while striking out three and walking two for the fourth-seeded Blue Knights (20-19).

Cortland stayed in the winners bracket by defeating No. 5 seed New Paltz 5-2. Top-seeded Brockport was upset by No. 6 seed Oswego 9-0 in the morning but stayed alive by beating New Paltz in the last game of the day.
