POTSDAM — Helen Giroux scored just 56 seconds into the first period Tuesday. It took the Plattsburgh State junior a little longer to find the net in the second period — 73 seconds.

Giroux doubled her career total with those two goals, and three players recorded their first career goal as Plattsburgh State beat Potsdam 9-3.

The Cardinals outshot the Bears 45-8.

"We got four goals early, and I thought we actually played better as the game went on," Plattsburgh State coach Kevin Houle said. "It was a good effort. Everybody worked hard."

The Cardinals (5-0, 5-0 ECAC West) are off this weekend and host Neumann Dec. 5-6 to wrap up the first semester.

After Giroux gave Plattsburgh State the early lead, Kristen Bond and Michelle Gatien scored eight seconds apart, and Kayla McDougall made it 4-0 in the middle of the first period.

McDougall also had two assists in the game. Freshmen Gatien, Shannon Flattery and Teal Gove all netted their first collegiate goals, and Gove added an assist.

Stephanie Moberg scored and earned an assist, Megan DiJulio potted her team-leading fifth goal of the season, and Britt McKegg and Natalie Aldridge had two assists apiece.

Goaltender Anne Loewen made her second start and totaled five saves.

Monique Gagner, Amanda King and Nicky Bougie scored for Potsdam (3-5, 1-4). Hilary Hitchman made 25 saves, and Jen Conophy played the third period and had 11.

The game included just three penalties — all against Potsdam.

"It was different than the last time we played there — that was a penaltyfest," Houle said. "Give Potsdam credit. They worked hard, they played hard and they played clean. They didn't generate much offense, but they did play hard, and I thought they played pretty well positionally."
