Berube leads Geneseo to title
Plattsburgh's Heymann, Schaffhouser both finish second in conference championship races

CORTLAND — Former Ticonderoga standout Lee Berube finished first Saturday to lead the Geneseo Blue Knights to the State University of New York Athletic Conference championship in men's cross country.

The Plattsburgh men, third in 2008, wound up fifth with 132 points. Geneseo won with 29, followed by Cortland, with 44.

The Cardinals' Michael Heymann, third last fall, moved up to second, eight seconds off Berube's winning pace.

A combination of the weather and a slow course saw a large pack early in the race. The pack began to thin out and the top five pulled away at around the 2.5-mile mark in the race. The top two (Berube and Heymann) then separated themselves with about a mile and a half remaining and Berube led the rest of the race.

Berube, a sophomore and the 2007 CVAC champion, finished 16th as a freshman. His brother, Jesse, a senior at Geneseo, came in ninth in 26:08.14.

Lee Berube and Heymann earned first team All-SUNYAC and entrance into the SUNYAC Cross Country Hall of Fame. Jesse Berube claimed a spot on the All-SUNYAC second team.

The Geneseo women, ranked ninth in the country, made it a sweep by easily winning their 10th straight conference crown.

Geneseo finished with 34 points while Cortland was second with 66 and the Plattsburgh women, third, with 79. It was the same order finish as in the 2008 conference meet.

The Cardinals' Jenny Schaffhouser, fourth a year ago, came in second with a time of 23 minutes, 18.50 seconds over the 6-kilometer course at Cortland.

In a field of 99 runners, Sandra Goettleman of Geneseo won the individual title with a time of 22:55, 23 seconds ahead of Schaffhouser. The two runners separated from the rest of the pack at about the 2.5-mile mark, with Goettleman pulling away for the victory.

Schaffhouser and teammate Stefanie Braun, who came in fourth in 23:33.28, also earned first team All-SUNYAC and a place in the conference Cross Country Hall of Fame.
