Cardinals roll 13 in recruiting
Plattsburgh State counting heavily on recruits

PLATTSBURGH — There's going to be plenty of new faces on the 2009-10 Plattsburgh State men's hockey team.

The Cardinals lost a lot of talent and leadership off last year's 24-2-2 squad and head coach Bob Emery has brought in 13 newcomers, including three goaltenders, to help fill the void this season.

Plattsburgh State, which needs to replace 10 players who were on the 2008-09 opening-day roster, takes to the ice Saturday night at 7 p.m. against Montreal's Concordia in an exhibition contest at the Stafford Ice Arena.

"We were fortunate to get Concordia to come here," Emery said. "It's the strongest exhibition game we've had so far.

"We're playing to win, even though we have everything to gain and nothing to lose. We'll find out what we need to work on."

Emery is taking a wait-and-see attitude with the newcomers.

"The recruiting process is an educated guess," Emery said. "You hope not to make a lot of mistakes. You don't know what you have until you see the recruits against opponents and this will be a good opportunity for them against Concordia.

"Our success will depend on how quickly the freshmen develop. Our freshmen need to make an impact every year and we bring in only what we need, keeping injuries in mind. It's a great opportunity for our freshmen.

"But, nothing will be handed to them."
