DID YOU KNOW?

You can look back over the last 70 years at some of the area athletes and personalities who made headlines in area sports. Flashback will revive memories of great local athletes and outstanding team successes.

Tennis
Oswego senior Tiarra Garrow (Morrisonville/National Sports Academy) has been named the winner of the Third-Annual Peter J. Cahill Award, presented annually to the State University of New York Athletic Conference's Most Valuable Player in women's tennis. The award honors the commitment and success of Cahill, a former Cortland tennis coach who passed away in 2006.

Garrow took second place in the No. 1 singles flight at the recent SUNYAC Women's Tennis Championships. She won a grueling first-round, three-set match that lasted over three hours. She then won her second-round match against an opponent who had beaten her during the regular season, before falling to the eventual SUNYAC champion in the final round.

Garrow finished the season with an overall singles record of 6-3. In addition to winning the Cahill Award, she was also recently named to the 2009 Women's Tennis All-SUNYAC Second Team. She was also a second-team all-conference selection in No. 1 singles last year.

In addition, Garrow has been named SUNY Oswego's Female Student-Athlete of the Week for the week ending Oct. 12.

Football
Sophmore Andrew McCormick (Peru/Peru), returned 6 kickoffs for 133 yards, and rushed the ball 6 times for 24 yards and a touchdown in SUNY Brockport's 56-20 loss to Rowan University on Oct. 3.

Saturday, the former Peru all-star, returned three kickoffs for 99 yards, including one for 54 yards, and rushed twice for five yards as the Golden Eagles lost to The College of New Jersey, 48-34.

McCormick is ranked second in the New Jersey Athletic Conference in kick returns, with 15 for 402 yards, averaging 26.8 per return. He is ninth in the conference in all-purpose yards averaging 87 a game.

Andrew's older brother, Matthew, also a standout athlete at Peru and a former Brockport football all-star, is assisting the coaching staff for the Golden Eagles.

SUNY Cortland freshman safety Steven Lenhart (Ticonderoga/Ticonderoga) was named New Jersey Athletic Conference Defensive Rookie of the Week for the week ending Sept. 20. Lenhart made four solo tackles and forced a fumble in the Red Dragons' 24-14 victory over visiting Rowan University. He came off the bench after an injury to Cortland's starting free safety one play into the game. On the next play, Lenhart's hit on a Rowan running back created a turnover that set up Cortland's first touchdown drive.

Cross country

Lee Berube (Putnam Station/Ticonderoga) was named SUNY Geneseo's student-athlete of the week for Sept. 28-Oct. 4. Berube, a sophomore biology major, led Geneseo to the team title at the 29th Annual Geneseo Cross Country Invitational by winning the individual title in a time of 25:11 over the eight-kilometer course.

Junior Rebecca Nashett (Tupper Lake/Saranac Lake) of Albany College of Pharmacy was selected Hudson Valley Women's Athletic Conference Runner of the Week for Sept. 27. She had the highest finish ever by an Albany Pharmacy runner, placing 11th in the Southern Vermont Invitational. She completed the 5-kilometer course in 24:43, missing out on a top-10 finish by three seconds.

Freshman Genna Hartung (Morrisonville/Seton Catholic) had another outstanding race for the Cornell women's cross-country team at Lehigh's Paul Short Invitational last week.

She placed 27th in 21:05 and she was followed closely by classmate Katie Kellner, who was 30th in 21:14. The two freshmen ran the third and fourth best Cornell times ever on the Paul Short 6K course. The women's Gold Race had 363 finishers.
